I would like to know where Smart Bran (and other Nature’s Path) cereals are produced - meaning specifically, where are the raw materials (wheat bran, oat fiber, etc) grown and where are the production facilities located? I see that there is a “Product of the U.S.A.” line on the cereal box, but it’s not clear if that means that the crops and production are both within the United States. Thank you!

Submitted by Justine on January 11, 2012 - 12:00.
Hi Ann and thanks for asking us your question! We purchase ingredients from United States and Canadian Suppliers and internationally from recognized third-party certified organic suppliers. Close to 90% of our ingredients are sourced from within North America, and that which we get from outside this area isn’t available in the quantity or quality we need. In this case, all ingredients in our Smart Bran are grown in North America except for the evaporated cane juice which comes from South America. We have production facilities in Delta, British Columbia, Canada, as well as Blaine, Washington and Sussex, Wisconsin in the United States. When the box is labeled as “product of USA” or “product of Canada”, this means that the product’s ingredients have been further processed in our North American facilities where compliance with food safety standards is tested and confirmed. Hope that helps. All the best, Justine, Nature’s Path Team

Submitted by Justine on December 1, 2011 - 12:19.
Hi Bob and thanks for taking the time to ask us your question. The wheat bran and oat bran used in this cereal isn’t whole grain. Our current nutrition panel listings don’t always describe whether the ingredient is or isn’t whole grain. For your reference, the following ingredients we use are are ALL WHOLE GRAIN:
Oat flakes
Oat Flour
Whole Wheat Meal
Brown Rice Flour
Sprouted Kernels
Millet
Quinoa
Amaranth
Spelt
Kamut
Corn (Leapin’ Lemurs, Vanilla + Maple Sunrise Crunch products only)
Buckwheat flour
Barley Flour
Bran is the fiber-rich outer layer of the grain. The following ingredients aren’t whoel grain:
Rice bran
Oat bran
Wheat bran. I hope that helps! All the best, Justine, Nature’s Path Team

Hi Joann and thanks for reaching out to us. Sometimes stores that no longer carry a particular product can make a special order for you so it might be worth asking Kroger’s. Also, you can try ordering this online on Amazon.com. If you need help finding this cereal closer than the Whole Foods Market in Atlanta, I suggest you get in touch with Nicolette, Consumer Services, using our contact form here: http://www.naturespath.com/contact-us, and she’ll be happy to try to find it for you. Hi Kevin and thanks for taking the time to ask us this question. When you say Richmond, I’m assuming you’re referring Richmond, British Columbia, Canada which is pretty cool to hear as our offices are located in Richmond too! You can always ask Galloway’s to place a special order from us. Nicolette, Consumer Services, also told me that you can find this cereal at Save-On-Foods. I hope you are able to find it and if not, please let us know. Happy munching, Justine, Nature’s Path Team.

I just bought Smart Bran and love it, but I’d like to know the ratio of wheat bran to psyllium and oatbran. I’m trying to eat as little wheat as possible, and up until now I’ve been eating Fiber One, which is just about all wheat, though it is whole grain. I’d like to think that the psyllium and oatbran are displacing a lot of wheat, but I don’t know. Please let me know. Thanks.

My favourite cereal! It’s a wonderful alternative to all of the fructose-laden others (wink wink, nudge) out there. However, the info here says that there are 13g of fiber in it. On the box, it says 8. The values for soluble/insoluble are different, too. Which is correct and why the discrepancy?

Hello, I have a nutritional question. What is the glycemic index or glycemic load of your Smart Bran cereal? And is it safe for diabetics? I really love all of your cereals, but I am now following a low glycemic diet. I have found the index/load of many of other Nature’s Path cereals, but not this one.
Thanks is advance!

Thanks for getting in touch with us Amanda! We don’t test our products on the glycemic index because it’s measured per 100 g, rather than the serving size and this can be wrongly interpreted. Therefore, we recommend you bring this product to your medical practitioner to determine how you can incorporate into your diet. Best, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your comment Jimmy. Because we are an organic company we use packaging that doesn’t contain artificial chemicals, preservatives or additives. We understand this causes some frustration so we’re currently looking to revamp our packaging using biodegradable compostable materials made from corn, wood or other food materials that meet certified organic health regulations. I have passed your comments to our Product Development team, so they know what our consumers are asking. All the best Jimmy, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team

I measured 2/3 cup of SmartBran this morning, making sure to be flat with the top of the cup, and the weight turned out to be 43g, not 30g. Wouldn’t those extra 13g change the nutritional value? Both my scale and measuring cup are quality, trustworthy brands. What would be more accurate nutrionally? the cup measure or the weight?

Submitted by Jamie on February 15, 2011 - 11:04.
Thanks so much for getting in touch with us Jeanette. Cereals are officially measured according to weight (grams) not volume (cups), as per government regulation. The 2/3 cup is just a rough guideline which can vary depeding on the density and settling of the cereal. If you pack the cereal in the cup, then the weight (grams) would be different. Since you have a scale and you want to keep track of sugars and calories, I highly suggest you measure the grams on your scale which will match the nutritionals. Best, Jamie, Nature’s Path Team
