Volunteering

A family planting an organic garden together
Giving up a little of your time to help others can do a lot of good. Whether you’re working in a food bank or spending time helping kids learn to read, someone’s getting more out of it than you’re putting in. And you’re spending time with people in your community that you might not otherwise get to meet. Building connections like that and helping others to thrive is what community is all about. You can help out in your community in a lot of ways. You can clean up graffiti. You can bring your pet to a retirement home for a visit. You can work in a soup kitchen. You can weed a neighborhood traffic circle. And you can get creative—what else needs doing? At times it may not feel like the hours you put in volunteering in your neighborhood will make a difference to the world at large. Even though the impact of one hour of one volunteer’s time may be small, when added together en masse it becomes a grass roots effort that does have a significant and beneficial impact on our society.
